About Airport Information
Our region has a good choice of airports served by both national carriers and `lower cost` airlines, including airports across the border in Spain. The operators, routes, and timetables change with little warning, sometimes according to the time of year, so be sure to check.. In the peak months, fares for the `low cost` airlines increase substantially if not booked well in advance and it`s often possible to find fares from the major airlines which are just as competitive. Skyscanner is a great site for checking prices and times, without having to search individual dates. The airlines serving airports most convenient to Chalabre are shown below: bmibaby British Airways Easyjet Flybe First Choice Ryanair Sterling Transavia Wizz Air Car Hire Is available at all of the local airports. France car hire is unbeatable for rates at most, using the best available supplier, but at much better prices than booking direct. Always check the insurance carefully to ensure that all of the basics are included. By Road The excellent French autoroute system will bring you to Castelnaudary, Bram, Carcassonne, or Pamiers; all only a short drive away. We will provide you with detailled directions when you book. Mappy and viaMichelin provide very good route-planning facilities.
About Weather/Climate/Temperature
We are close to Spain, at 400 meter. Nights are not hot. We have very big walls against the hot weather. Very good weather till October/november.
About Family Activities
The Pic de Soularac (near Montségur, where 200 Cathars were burned to death in 1244) is only 16 miles from here - it is setting for the climax of Kate Mosse`s bestseller Labyrinth. Medieval Carcassonne is also heavily featured - see the Guardian article about it. The novel is ideal for getting a feel for the beautiful region of the Pays d`Oc - just the thing to read before coming, or while relaxing by the pool! Mirepoix Cathedral (12 miles away) is well worth a visit and also has a Labyrinth. As well as being very beautiful, this area is rich in medieval history! And for those who would like to visit three countries in one day, the Spanish border is just a couple of hours away, either through Andorra or along the coastal autoroute.

Walking & Cycling : This is an area with fine views and walks - the track which passes Bourdil goes in one direction towards Lac de Montbel through the woods (see picture), or in the other direction towards the village to connect with a variety of routes randonnées and VTT trails (walking and cycling circuits). There are fantastic views from a number of walks in the immediate area. We are also fortunate to have some impressive wildlife locally - birds of prey include Black Kites and Red Kites as well as Harriers and Buzzards.
About History
Cathar Castles : This is Cathar country. For lovers of history and legend, there are many impressive Cathar fortresses nearby, including Puivert and Montsegur where in 1244, 225 martyrs chose to be burnt at the stake, rather than give up their faith.
